A Kindle Christmas

Apparently the only gift I'm getting for Christmas is a Kindle. It's all I really need. It's all I really want. I was determined, that, if one was not given to me, I would buy one myself. My mother came through with flying colors and sent me hers.

I got it today and opened it, played with it, loved it.

I hate being glued to my computer to read. It's bad enough I have to sit here and write, network, and watch Youtube videos. I need to be able to move around sometimes! That is one thing that won't change for me. I can hold a pageless device, but I cannot be glued to what reminds me of a school desk.

I hated reading in school. It always had the feeling of “having to”.

The Kindle is fun
I wasn't at my desk.

E-reading is the future for most people. I honestly believe that, not as a writer, but as a reader.

Physical books cost too much these days, and prices keep going up. E-books, especially those self-published e-books which are just as good as any other book, and all of the classics no one owns the rights to anymore, are an inexpensive way to go.

Physical books take up a lot of space. I have a bookshelf with just shy of one-hundred books. If I moved tomorrow I would give all but a few favorites away. I'm a minimalist. I'm not packing these books and taking them with me. I would rather move and rebuy them. What if I owned one-thousand books?

An e-reader, not necessarily a Kindle, is all about economy. Price and space. Price and space.

Now, if only someone will invent cheap Hoi Poi Capsules!

  3. I love my Kindle, I got it last Christmas. It is really nice to be able to buy books that don't take up so much space, and with my carpal tunnel, not lugging around a seemingly 100 lb book is really nice!

    Hope you really love yours!

  4. Hello.
I was never that much into school & left when I was 14! My wife's the reader in the family & just loves books. She's got them everywhere. I'm surprised the shelves haven't collapsed yet...they're that stuffed!. She was interested in a Kindle, but bought herself a tablet instead, which also doubles as a reader, so she gets her "library" too. She let me "borrow" it last night & I couldn't put it down. I'm not much of a techie, but even I could navigate this thing. I like the compact size & I don't have to be glued to the computer chair to use it. It even has flash which is great for me because I like watching old Indian music on YouTube. I can see this new gadget is going to be a cause of many disputes over who gets to use it first!

I'm glad your Santa mom came through for you. Hope you get much joy out of it.
Thanks for sharing & all the best for the holidays!

  8. Kathlyn, I REALLY love mine. I hope it's not just because it's "new and different". I've really had a hard time reading lately, really for the last five months, and today is the most I've read in one day in a long time!

Thanks, Andy! I hated school, and never much liked to read while I was there, but after school I would read quite a bit for a boy my age. The tablets are really cool. My mom has an ipad, so she wasn't too keen on the Kindle anyway :P

Jyoti... I wasn't going to wait much longer. I have some really good books I wanted to read and just couldn't read them at my computer. I hope you get yours soon!

Thanks for commenting, Lego and Jessica.

Merry Christmas to all of you!

  9. hi J.R.Nova
    Merry Christmas!
Congrats for the kindle...I was planning to buy it but still faced with lot of worries..what books can be downloaded for free?what format it supports?pdf?is it better to go for other mobile-based or tab-based portable readers...Maybe I need to research more..I guess i'll stick to paper books for some more time..the smell of the paper and the feel to go with it!

  10. Rohit, I just did a test to make sure I could put PDFs on my Kindle and it worked like a charm! Word documents will work as well. I'm no expert, so I don't know which ones are better or worse, but I definitely see the value in having something that can multitask, like an Apple product.

If you want something just for reading, though, I don't think you'll be disappointed with a Kindle (or a Nook, etc.). I'm over the moon for mine ;)

  11. We are a family of eReaders. I got my mom a Nook Color loaded with games, photos, music, and movies for Christmas because she doesn't like to read and it does so much more, especially with the extra memory I added. My oldest daughter got a Nook Color as well from her boyfriend, and my son got a Kindle Fire for Christmas from his wife. Me? I'm an iPad2 girl, and love the fact I have 4 eReaders on it, as well as all the other stuff it does. It's all about portability for me, and like you, I hate being stuck at a desk. I spend plenty of time at my desk at work, at home I want to move around. :)

I guess by now you can tell I'm a techie geek. :) glad you love your Kindle.
